What Is Linocut Artwork?

Linocut is a relief printmaking technique in which an image is carved into a sheet of linoleum, then inked and pressed onto paper to create a print. It belongs to the same family of printmaking as woodcut, but linoleum's smoother, more forgiving surface allows for finer detail and cleaner lines than traditional wood carving.

Each linocut print begins as hand-carved original artwork — meaning every print pulled from that block carries the texture and character of a piece made entirely by hand, not mechanically reproduced or digitally generated.

The Process

  • Design. The image is first drawn or transferred onto the surface of a linoleum block, often in reverse, since whatever is carved away will print white, and whatever remains raised will hold the ink and print in color.
  • Carving. Using specialized carving tools, the artist cuts away the negative space of the design — everything that should not print — leaving the positive image standing in relief on the block's surface. This is slow, deliberate work; every line is carved by hand, and there's no undo.
  • Inking. Ink is rolled evenly across the raised surface of the block using a brayer (a hand roller), coating only the parts that were left standing after carving.
  • Printing. Paper is laid over the inked block and pressure is applied — either by hand with a wooden spoon or baren, or with a printing press — transferring the ink from the raised surface onto the paper.
  • Pulling the print. The paper is carefully peeled away to reveal the finished print. Each "pull" from the block is a unique, individually printed piece — subtle variations in ink coverage and pressure mean no two prints are ever perfectly identical, even from the same block.
  • Drying and finishing. The print is set aside to dry fully before being trimmed, signed, and prepared for framing or display.

Because each print requires its own hand-inking and hand-pressing, a limited-edition run — like the 11x14 print — is genuinely limited: once the edition is complete, reproducing it exactly is not possible without returning to the original hand-carved block, which itself shows gradual wear with each use.
